Personal Statement

My professional interests and roots began in Intensive Care Nursing, working in a busy ICU environment for 2 years. In 1977, I was hired by a group of open heart surgeons in Nashville, Tennessee to assist them in the operating room, to develop a patient teaching program and to compile research data. Those five years provided a solid background of knowledge working with critical care patients. Looking for a different challenge, I entered a two year anesthesia program at Dartmouth- Hitchcock Hospital in New Hampshire. There, I met my husband, William Stoddard, who was in medical school at the time.We married and he subsequently entered the anesthesia program at Dartmouth to become an anesthesiologist. Our 2 children were born in that hospital. His commitment to the military took us to Landstuhl, Germany for three years where I worked half-time as a staff nurse anesthetist. He served in Desert Storm in Saudi Aradia during the last part of our overseas tour and transferred to Alaska to finish his military career at Bassett Army Regional Hospital at Fort Wainwright. I began working at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital on a part time basis. Now, we both work at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital with a wonderful and competent group of professionals.

My philosophy in my own profession of anesthesia, and for life in general, is to make the most of your God given talents whatever those may be. Anesthesia is a rewarding career because through caring, expertise, technique and pharmacology, we do our utmost to provide a safe experience for you or your family members undergoing surgery. This can be a very stressful time for the patient and their families. Our job and our pleasure is using our training and talent to make it as pleasant and as stress free as possible.
